Lumbago - back pain - neck pain causes

Lumbago causes

It is not a specific disease but rather a complaint. [1] It is often the result of minor muscular or skeletal problems, such as sprains [2].

Physical causes may include osteoarthritis, disc degeneration (discopathy) between vertebrae, herniated disc, vertebral fracture (due to osteoporosis or an old trauma, or a sport that requires a lot of lumbar vertebrae), or rarely, an infection or tumor of the spine. [3]

In women, caution should be exercised because low back pain can result from medical conditions affecting their genital system, including endometriosis, ovarian cysts, ovarian cancer or uterine fibroids [4]. Nearly half of pregnant women report pain in the lower back or sacral area during pregnancy due to changes in their posture and center of gravity, causing muscle and ligament tension [5].

Back pain causes

We find the same causes as at the lumbar level with more specific:

Poor posture: This is a major risk factor for upper back pain, especially if your work involves the use of a computer and you tend to lean forward while sitting at your desk.

Muscle Cause: This often happens if you do not use the proper lifting technique. Always bend your knees when lifting objects and carrying heavy objects close to your body to reduce back muscle fatigue that can cause pain.

Myofascial Pain: This condition affects the fascia, which is the connective tissue in and between the muscles. Myofascial pain is characterized by hardened or knotted "trigger points" that hurt if squeezed, and the pain tends to present as a burning and tingling sensation.

Other non-spinal dorsal causesmyocardial infarction (in women in particular), aortic aneurysm, pleurisy.

Neck pain causes

  1. Cervicalgia known as "common" and torticollis

They occur outside of a traumatic context and in the absence of an illness that can cause pain. The
responsible factors are multiple: anxiety, professional or sports activities, bad positions, osteoarthritis. The frequency of non-specific neck pain is estimated at 12 cases per 1000 population per year. About two-thirds of the French population is concerned in their life by a painful episode of the neck resulting in local stiffness. Among these common cervicalgias, we distinguish: Postural cervicalgia in young adults They are favored by prolonged flexion attitudes, often related to inappropriate posture during work or leisure. The pains most often affect the back of the neck and radiate towards the middle of the back and shoulders. The neck can still move. Cervicalgia of the older subject They are usually lower. The pains can be more or less prolonged. The mobility of the neck is diminished and often painful. Neck pain is usually related to cervical spondylosis. Torticollis This acute episode begins abruptly and often at night. It can occur, for example, as a result of a sudden movement or a bad position taken during sleep. It results in the occurrence of contracture of one or more muscles of the neck

2- Cervicalgia due to cervical trauma: the "whiplash"

This trauma may be due to a rear impact in a vehicle or during a dive. But all other traumatisms affecting the cervical spine may be responsible for acute neck pain.

3- The rare symptomatic cervicalgia due to a disease

Symptomatic neck pain is when the pain reveals a local or general illness. These are rarer cases related to an inflammatory disease (ankylosing spondylitis ...), infectious, vascular or tumor, etc.
